St. George WWII Monument Dedication follow up: Photos, video, etc.

St. George WWII Monument On Saturday, July 6, 2024, a dedication ceremony was held for the new St. George WWII Monument. It is located in the St. George section of St. John Vianney Cemetery in Carrick. The monument plaque was created by renowned sculptor Frank Vittor in 1947 and was placed on the front of St. George Church. It includes 1,017 names of St. George parishioners who served in WWII of whom 35 lost their lives. The National Anthem was sung by Tom Wilding, the Invocation by Fr. Dan Valentine, and the rifle volley, playing of Taps and folding the flag by American Legion 935. After the unveiling, the flag was presented to WWII Veteran, Merchant Marine, Howard Pfeifer. Over 100 veterans, parishioners, alumni and Allentown neighbors attended. Please join us on Independence Day weekend as we honor the greatest generation. MONUMENT DEDICATION CEREMONY The dedication ceremony for the monument will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 6, 2024. St. George WWII Monument On Veterans Day we announced our partnership with Mary, Queen of Peace Parish to repair and restore the St. George WWII plaque that was once located on the front of St. George Church. The construction work on the monument is moving forward and should be completed soon. The plaque displays the names of 1,017 St. George parishioners who served in WWII and includes the 35 who lost their lives. St. George WWII Memorial Construction Update

Dear St. George & Allentown Community: Since the announcement in our Veterans Day newsletter, our partnership has made progress on the repair, restoration and refinishing of the plaques and the construction of the St. George WWII Monument. It will be located in the St. George section of St. John Vianney Cemetery. We are starting to plan a dedication ceremony sometime around the 80th Anniversary of D-Day in June. Please help us to contact any WWII veterans and families who could attend the dedication ceremony with a possible reception to follow. Reply to this email with any contact information that you can provide. Click  HERE  and take a few moments to check the 1,017 names that are listed on the memorial. St. George News & 2023 in Review

To all Friends, Neighbors, Supporters, Alumni, and Parishioners of St. George and St. John Vianney:   HAPPY 2024 TO OUR ST. GEORGE COMMUNITY! ~UPDATES~ VATICAN APPEAL Our original appeal of the closing of St. George Church (St. John Vianney) had advanced to the Apostolic Signatura (Supreme Court) at the Vatican in 2019. Although we expected their final decision in late 2020, the pandemic added to the delay in the long process and we continued to wait. Unfortunately, in November, 2022, we were very disappointed to be notified that the Vatican court had rejected our appeal. Regardless, in 2023 we kept our St. George Community connected and we will continue to organize fellowship events that bring our community together. We will maintain the SGCPS and support our network of over 1,400 contacts. HISTORIC DESIGNATION In light of the Vatican decision, we notified the Pittsburgh Historic Review Commission that the decision may have an effect on the Federal Court injunction. We are waiting on
