To all Friends, Neighbors, Supporters, Veterans, Alumni, and Parishioners of St. George and St. John Vianney: UPDATES OF 2025 January We wrapped up our membership drive and the 2025 calendar sale.
February We were notified by the City of Pittsburgh that the Federal Court issued it's opinion regarding the Historic Nomination of St. George Church (St. John Vianney Church). The Court ruled that the historic nomination is invalid. We were thankful to the Historic Review Commission, the City Planning Commission and City Council for their preliminary approvals of this nomination. Also, we are thankful our faithful parishioner, Mark Wittman who submitted the application and Preservation Pittsburgh who prepared the documentation throughout the long process and also everyone who supported this nomination.
June
The St. George & Allentown Community gathered in the Victoria Room at Salvatore's Event Center for a memorable event presented by SGCPS. The crowd was excited and appreciative for this opportunity to gather and reminisce. There were many compliments for the fun event and good food. In addition to music, there were raffles and slide shows of St. George memories & WWII Veteran's photos, a selection of yearbooks, a display of the St. George WWII Monument and St. George trophies. Guests also gathered around the replica St. George Statue for photos & shopped at the St. George Store for mugs, and the 1960's St. George sketch by artist Calvin Lynch.
September
After securing a permanent location for the St. George statue from the Schramm Hall gym, it was transported to Mike's Refinishing in Finleyville to start the restoration process.
November
SGCPS started the annual membership drive and 2026 calendar sales.
December
We were happy to announce that the St. George statue that was originally placed on the Schramm Hall gym in 1957 is now displayed on the Alla Famiglia Restaurant at 800 Warrington Ave. (formerly the Hilltop Theater, Autenreith's 5 & 10, Golden Dawn Supermarket & Shwartz's Market) The statue was removed from Schramm Hall when the building was sold in 2013. It was rescued by a faithful parishioner, Gary Lindner (1951-2017). Gary's family donated the statue to SGCPS in 2017. SGCPS coordinated and funded the repair, restoration and mounting of the statue which was installed on December 28, 2025. We are thankful to Jonathan Vlasic, owner of Alla Famiglia, for providing a prominent place for the St. George statue in the Allentown neighborhood. Click HERE to view photos of the restoration and installation. Looking ahead in 2026: SGCPS continues to provide storage for St. George archives, trophies and memorabilia while working to secure a place for permanent display.
We thank you for your continued support, SGCPS |
